The first stage of golem customization is now live.

You can choose to use the current golem image (the Virtruvian man-influenced parchment layout you see when looking at a golem) or the basic customized image. If you use the custom image, it will appear when viewing that golem on its page (golem.php?g=XXXX), in combat reports, and when people look at your workshop (assuming a customized golem is guarding the workshop).

Golem customizations take up no weight and can not be lost or stolen; if a golem is destroyed they should reappear in your list of available customizations, ready to be used on another golem. Most customizations will be acquired by trading in Premium Tickets, though you do not have to be a Premium Member to use them.

You can access the new customization area from the menu bars. To turn a golem customization on, simply click the image on your individual golem.php?g=XXXX page, and click again to turn it off.

This is Stage One because only backgrounds are currently live, though you can see from the Custom Page [www.muelsfell.com/custom.php] that there will eventually be options for all manner of things to do to your golems. These will range from sunglasses, fake mustaches, and pirate hats to tattoos and enscriptions to ninja outfits and schoolgirl uniforms. Eventually I'd also like the option to have golems appear to be made of different materials (for example, a marbled stone golem versus the current granite stone).

There is still some tweakage needed on the various golem images themselves; I had to make some compromises to keep the sizes reasonable and I'll be continuing to tweak them as a couple (adamantine in particular) are a bit jagged on the edges. This will do for now, however -- I really want to focus 100% on the spell system since it's so long overdue. Meanwhile there are nearly 30 different backgrounds to choose from and some are quite nice if I do say so myself.

As always with a new release, please let me know any problems, bugs, or questions. Thanks and enjoy! :D

In the depot, clicking the image of a golem changes it to a blank image; exiting the golem's page and coming back displays the proper image.

When viewing someone else's workshop clicking the image doesn't change it to the stat display. Using firefox 3.0.2.

Both of this issues should be fixed.

To address the clan depot issue, I just removed the ability to click it there -- since golems in the clan depot are technically "ownerless," this could cause other problems with the customization system. I'll put in a better fix later on as I refine things.

Also, an example of what this can look like can be seen in my profile (expect to see a clay golem called Mud Master in a dark hallway, assuming I haven't swapped it out for testing other things by the time you guys read this post):

I'm not getting any background options when I go to the customise page?

Also, since most of my golems are transmuted will there be options for showing that in some way... or just having the option for having either style of golem shown rather than just the end one... Cos it seems little strange to have this huge Iron golem standing there for my transmuted Flesh...

Just curious...

Use this link to go to the Custom Shop:

http://www.muelsfell.com/world/customshop.php

Link is from the customization page that Kep gave the link for, right below the [Choose] box at the top of the page.

Are there plans to have the picture take into account missing limbs? For instance the one I have outside now has no left arm, but the picture is the default, two-armed flesh.

I'd like to do something special to indicate transmuted golems, but I'm not sure what that will be. Likely a different "material" image for the transmuted golem.

At this time, there's no plan to take into account missing limbs or chimeras. When I originally thought of doing this, I wanted to take into account both -- but the file sizes due to the extra stacked images made it impractical. The customization assumes a fully functional golem.

You can also reach the customization shop on the local map. It's just north of Mottonsborough, a little above the middle of the map.

Sorry about the long list of "No options found", but I'd hoped to get at least a sample of each done by now. I just really need to clear this project for the time being so I can finish spells, then come back and add more art later.

By the way, those of you who have glass golems have probably already noticed that I changed the artwork for them. They now look closer to how I visualize them: rough humanoids of jagged glass with an almost sad face.

I plan to revise bronze, adamantine, brass, flesh, wood, and possibly stone before I add the "costume" items (hats, masks, etc).

Stone's good & Wood's not bad. You should focus on revising the other ones.

The glass change is interesting, but the legs look really short to me which seems counter to their high speed. Just my opinion.

Not a complaint, but a difference of opinion.

Clay is butt ugly ;) I imagined clay to be the easiest of the materials to make beautiful. Not that there's any particular reason that a golem needs to even be biped (unless somehow attuned to the Anima needed) but Clay should either look more feminine or at least more Hulking (apple shaped, not pear shaped).

I'd love to see it where a higher level golem has a more refined picture, displaying greater craftsmanship commensurate with the power & level.

yeah, I don't like the clay picture at all. I imagined (particularly high-level) clay golems as, well... like the one in the promotional art - a big hulking mass of slightly oozy clay.

It's not a beer gut, it is padding to protect the 6-pack!!

I guess for the clay golems you can take influence from Clayface of the Batman series. Whether Arkham ste...I mean borrows from one of the comics or the cartoons is up for debate.

Clay is actually one of my favourites. It's the same model as the one in the promotional images, just has different lighting (and possibly a different coloured clay texture). The clay is influenced by the artwork from an old AD&D monster manual.

I'd like to offer other body types as customization options down the road. Feminine forms are not out of the realm of possibility, but there are some logistics I'd have to figure out first.

I noticed that the Homunculi have a different mini-icon than the flesh. Are there any plans to use the new icons in the market? That would definately eliminate the renamed fleshie issue.

There's a certain Jack Skellington-ness to the mini icon that makes me smile :)

Yup, that's the same clay golem model. Different clay texture and a green light in the head. The camera is aimed up, which combined with Mayumi standing in front of his legs makes him seem a lot taller than he really is.

All the new golems are 3D rendered images, so there's a fair amount of room for making alternate images and such... the limitation is having the time to do it, what with spell system work.

I'll be updating the market icons as well, though because they're so tiny it's a little tricky to get them easy to identify at a glance.
