The following are collected posts from the TOMU roleplay forum

Many years ago...

A 16-year-old girl-child lay on the large, comfortable bed, her black hair spread across the green comforter. Her right hand was raised towards the ceiling, and slowly she curled it halfway into a fist, then flexed it again. She would not think about her parents. She would not remember the terrible heat, the flames that had shut down her last friend as he shielded her with his body. She refused to ponder once more if her questions had distracted her father, if the fatal flaw in the engine they were trying to perfect had been due to her incessant pestering. At fifteen, she'd been a curious lab assistant; surely it wasn't her fault that her parents, on the verge of perfecting the steam engine and streamlining it, on the very cusp of achieving an unprecedented 500 Aems of power, had made a fatal flaw in the cooling. Surely it wasn't her fault that only one golem attended them in the laboratory, and therefore only one life had been saved.

So much for not thinking about it.

She resumed her focus to her hand once more, curling the pinky and thumb towards each other, then uncurling, watching how the muscles rippled, how the skin folded. It was almost beautiful, the human hand. True, it was nothing compared to the human eye, but it had a subtle beauty all its own. Why didn't the graduate students ever understand when she spoke with them? Just because she was a ward of the University rather than a student didn't make her stupid, just uneducated.

Uneducated...

Yamiko sat up, her hair falling back into place. Well, why not? After all, this was a university, and it's not like she was doing all that much here. A year she'd spent mourning her parents - SOMEONE had to continue their research. She was smart enough - her parents had been geniuses in the field of golem component creation - and dedicated enough, surely. Who better to fulfill their legacy?

Half an hour later, a sixteen-year-old girl with emerald-green hair, wearing a light blue top instead of black for the first time in a year, knocked on the door to the headmaster's chambers. When the door opened, she wasted no time declaring her mission:

"I want to apply for admission to the University."

---

Chancellor Kaelas, newly appointed to his office after the death of the founder, Sterling, looks up in tired confusion. It had been a long day getting used to his new duties, and getting people used to him. And now this.

Some young girl with emerald-green hair, wearing some supposedly stylish light blue top (kids) and the most determinedly 'I'm not scared or nervous' look he's seen in years comes barging in with demands. After hours. Why me, he wonders.
--
Yami thrusts a bundle of papers at the new chancellor - he'd given a pretty speech at her parents' funeral, not that she recalled much of the actual words. All about how they'd been so very smart and talented and young, they'd gone too soon... surely he'd understand the needs that drove her. Why, he was probably stunned speechless at the brilliance of her plan even now. Though. She'd be a lot more comfortable when he recovered and commended her on her brilliance. Any time now.
--
And now she wants him to read a stack of papers thicker than than a gold coin. Wonderful. "Why are you bothering me with this so late at-" Kaelas reads the top page as he reprimands the girl and his eye catches on her last name. Kuronue. Lily and Saul Kuronue's little girl. Mother Night.

He clears his throat and looks at the girl before him, who is now slowly backing away from him with a look of hurt and betrayal on her face. "Miss, ah, Yamiko, correct? I'm sorry lass. I've had a bad day and I took it out on you. I cry your pardon. Let me try again. How can I help you?"
--
Yamiko grins impishly, crossing her arms. "I told you. I wish to apply for admission to the university. The paperwork's all there, and I've included the proper placement tests and everything. If you'll sign off, I shan't need an adviser or anything, I can register for my own classes."
--
So she wants to really become part of the University, eh? He glances through the paperwork, noting that she had indeed filled out all of the paperwork. And with more accuracy and better handwriting than students twice her age. Tests scores were... interesting. Startlingly high marks in nearly all engineering, maths and science fields. But he's fairly certain he knows more of Muelsfell's history and fine art culture. And he wasn't born or educated here.

It's like meeting her mother again. But with her father's looks and charm. Sweet Darkness but they were good people. He hadn't known them long, not nearly long enough, but they had made him feel welcome despite his reputation of being unsettling and forbidding. It seems he can pay his debt to them after all. "I have an even better idea than that."
--
Yamiko raises an eyebrow, curious. As she waits for him to continue, arms still crossed over her budding breasts, she looks the man over critically. A better idea, huh? She was skeptical. After all, adults always thought they knew better - chances were, he'd suggest she attend public high school to get a "better rounded education" before applying. Despite having nothing but respect for her parents' genius, people tended to assume homeschooling was poor schooling - and she was sick of it. So she said nothing, waiting to hear what he's got to say.
--
His eyebrow goes up. So young to be so cynical. Smart girl. Kaelas tosses the papers on his desk and gestures for her to follow him over to the shelves along the wall. He pulls out some glasses, then pauses. "How old are you again? I forget what the local customs are for drinking wine." Kaelas turns to look at Miss Yamiko as she replies "I'm sixteen. I can drink wine." Kaelas nods, then turns around and grins to himself. Girl's likely never had a sip in her life.

He pours them each a glass on wine, and hands her one. He takes a sip, then waits a beat for her to do the same. She merely stares at him, obviously more interested in his "better idea."

He fights back another grin and causally says "You are aware of the reasoning behind the advisory system, no? It's not just for picking classes. Advisers also help their students with those classes, help them get supplies for projects, give general life advice. And of course, they can pull strings and so forth to allow very underage students take advanced courses they shouldn't be allowed in without years of boring, time-consuming basic classes. Still not interested in having an Sponsor?"

The following is simply handy information

Name: Yamiko "Yami" Kuronue
Title: Ambassatrix Plenipotentiary, Main-Campus Resident Advisor, Independent Researcher
Clan: Magisterius University
Known family:
Parents: Saul Kuronue and Lily Genovia Kuronue, deceased
Adopted father: Kaelas (no last name on record)
Older cousin: Raiden Kuronue (ChaosRed), currently a Teaching Assistant for the Department of Chaomancy, son of Solomon Kuronue and his wife
Fiancee: Saint Coyne

Yamiko's hair color changes frequently; until a few days prior, it was shoulder-length and pink, but she's recently cut it short and dyed it black to fit her more somber mood while on leave from her duties. She is rather young, having been accepted to the university at age 16; her parents were well respected researchers at the university, and several have claimed that she has taken advantage of that respect to advance her own career. Nevertheless, she is looked on with a fond, almost parental gaze by Kaelas and Denerid, and her spats with Sconibulus border on sibling rivalry.

During the MAGIER wars, Yami was often seen commanding the hulking bronze golem Viktor, her favorite of the clan golems; she also created several glass golems that she uses as occasional guards or assistants when not in use by the clan.

Yamiko is currently engaged to Saint Coyne; above information has been edited to reflect that.
