I had a golem recently have its chest take more damage than it should have been able to(at least i think so) The combat screen said its chest collapsed and the combat ended in a loss. However my golem was not destroyed it just had 1 HP on the chest.

Now it was wearing a heavy iron plate on its chest(not sure if that matters) and the golems overall HP was at 26.

Do both the chest and the golems overall HP have to hit 0 for it to die? or just the overall HP hit 0?

Because it does not seem to be just the chest unless that message meant the chest only had 1 HP left.

Once a golem's chest hits zero HP it will shut down and the combat will end. This is as such in order to make golems more difficult to completely destroy. Once the golem's general hp hits zero, however, it will be totally destroyed along with any and all limbs, personal items, and clan items still attached. A golem's general HP is only lowered by the destruction of limbs, critical hits, and being shut down.

Actually both chest and overall have to be taken down simultaneously. It will shut down if the chest is beaten but overall isn't or if the overall is beaten but the chest isn't. Having your chest beaten damages your overall, but I don't believe having your overall beaten hurts your chest any.

critical hit damage and damage above and beyond the hit points the part has go directly to your HP. When the chest shuts down at 1hp, repeated assaults deal all but one of any chest damage dealt to the HP: 1 to reduce chest to 0, the rest directly to hp. To kill a golem, you have to keep pounding its chest after it shuts down "due to excessive damage" without taking out the pelvis or abs (because those will make it unable to defend without killing it).
