Yamiko huddles in a pew, once more returning to one of her favorite spots to lose herself in thought - the chapel was near her workshop, and so pretty, with the stained glass... Still, today she was not in search of glass-borne beauty, but instead something more truthful and real - a home.
Hearing the man she had arranged to meet coming up the aisle behind her, she does not turn to look at him; she does, however, speak in a soft, quivering voice.
"Can I... stay with you for a while?" |

Father Coyne was full of hesitations and frantic expectations as he advanced up the familiar aisle. Her words almost made him falter, but so did everything in his head right then.
"Yami..." He said cautiously, afraid even so sure a thing could be wrong in this upside down word. "Yes, you can stay with me. There's been nothing I've wanted more, since..." His voice dropped away. He wasn't sure he could say this.
"... Yami, when I told you I loved you the other night, I wasn't lying. Just like you told me you never wanted to be alone, I never wanted to leave you alone."
Father Coyne reached then, and placed his hand on the poor girl's shoulder, hoping that some measure kindness could be transmitted through the gesture, that beneath those clothes some part of his warmth could be felt. |

Yami turned to Kibble - no, she knew better now. Yamiko Kuronue, heir to a legacy a single generation deep of genius and hard work, looked up with puffy eyes at Saint Coyne, leader of the Angelic Order, and swallowed.
"I... I've lost everything. My home, my family... I can help you, I can be your secretary or... I'm not destitute. I just... I'm so tired. I want someplace to rest for a while. If that's ok." Her mind reeling, she struggled to put her feelings into words. "I... I can't stop thinking about you," she whispers, keeping her gaze boldly on his face. |

"You haven't lost everything, Yamiko. Not yet. Not while I'm here. Not while there is love in this world, and..." Coyne choked one his word here, and dropped down to his knee so his head was level with hers.
"...and not while you have a beating heart, Yami. As long as there is blood flowing through your veins, you will be something worth protecting."
Coyne shook his head, bringing his thoughts back in order, a hectic order of reparsing, reorganizing, reprioritizing. |

Yami swallowed, looking into the man's eyes. The man before her was no charlatan, no smooth-talking dissembler - whatever his original intentions, it was clear he truly, truly cared about her.
"...Coyne..." she whispers, her heart feeling like it might either leap from her mouth or burst with joy.
"...I love you..." |

A thin sheen of sweat was appearing on Father Coyne's brow as he spoke.
Spit it out.
"I love you, and I never want you to be alone again, Yami, so..."
He self-consciously ran his handkerchief across his brow before continuing...
"So, I want to be here for everything you need and..."
Ugh...
"If you have lost your family, then... then why don't we forge one anew, you and I?
Why don't we...

Yamiko stares into Coyne's crystal blue eyes, the rest of the world fading back to a muted grey. Marry? Marry Coyne? At first she opens her mouth to reject him - she's way too young, she's got a career....
But she's not as young as she once was, she realizes. She's a woman now, not a teenage girl anymore...
And her career is in the toilet anyway.
And being with Coyne these past few months made her feel... giddy. Daring. To be brutally honest with herself, she'd never felt so good in her life as when she received a letter from him. And their one night together, really together... well, it'd been amazing.
And...
And she can't bear to say no to him. She can't imagine saying no. She can't do anything but say...
"...yes." She whispers, breathily. "...I... yes." |

In his lair, Echothrice likewise raises his head. "I feel as if my internal organs are in jeopardy." He backs his wheelchair away from his worktable. "I think I'll call it a night."
As he pulls away, a few sparks issue forth from his...project, and then nothing. |
