I have a couple of questions for people with more experience.

1. What kind of golem should I specialize in? I like speed, but I'm not sure I could keep the rare resource level I'd need to build something like the glass golem.

2. Which is better, increasing your level, or increasing your motivation? I increased my level to 2 without realizing the the motivation cap could be raised separately.

3. What should I be doing with my motivation? So far I've been spending most of it on battling monsters, with occasional mine trip, but I was wondering if there was a better way?

1. Speed? Best bet so far would be a bone golem. Sturdier than flesh and glass, faster than clay and iron. I'd replace every part other than the chest with Lv5 iron though, since golem type and level is only dependent on the chest. Bone is rather cheap on the market too, a big plus if it gets damaged frequently.

2. Increasing level costs (level +1) X 100 experience, and increases motivation by 4 and motivation regeneration speed. Motivation increase always costs 100 exp per motivation. If you're aiming to raise solely the motivation cap, start increasing it after level 4. Otherwise stick with level until you feel the regeneration needs a higher cap.

3. Ways to spend motivation:
-Attack someone.
-Attack monsters.
-Do missions.

Missions give around 2-5 exp for 6 motivation, and are good for starters who have a lot of motivation but little resources for repairs. Personally I hunt Lv4 monsters with my lv1 starter and get 9 exp per 6 motivation.

On the xp/motivation point. I initially raised my motivation so I could hunt more but kept my level down to stay of the PVP radar. If I was starting again now I would join a clan for protection and then just raise my level, more money when you work and I think there's a to hit bonus but I've never really paid too much attention.

The other thing you can spend xp on is raising the strength of your golems. Either your starter to get more loot while xp hunting or on your bone for PVP. I'm sure there's a number of other threads on both these but for a start, read these threads if you get a chance:
