I was wondering if putting a lot of armour on your golem slows them down at all or affects their fighting ability in any way?

I noticed that one my first golem, who was wearing iron studs and leather straps, does not get in as many good hits as the second (both flesh lvl 1) who has no protection on at all. The second golem seems to be taking out monsters in the second round of combat almost every time. Coincidence?
