Sconibulus stands and catches her shoulder, turning her back to face him. "If you really believe that, you're too far gone to reason with." He sits down again heavily, permitting her to stay or go as she sees fit. |

Yamiko turns, her eyes misty. "...This is where I belong now, Sconi. I'm getting married - it wouldn't look good to rush back to some other clan first chance I get." |

"You know, most wives don't follow their husbands to work. How would it look at all amiss to keep your job, and your passion? You suffer without the feeling of power coursing into your creations, without the odor of thaumic discharge, without the heat of a welder, or the focus of harmonizing a mask... Can you resist the siren call of true research?" |

"I still do research!" she protests, nostrils flaring. "I just... have been busy lately, that's all. And it's different when you're the ambassador for a rival clan, that's the point. It's not like I'm giving up pottery for weaving or something trivial like that." |

"Bah, I refuse to see any difference. I'm sure if you asked the potter or the seamstress they would say that their work was far from trivial, and they'd have a point. How could we cook or be clothed save by their efforts? More to the point, how exactly am I supposed to torment you if you aren't around?" |

Yamiko hangs her head a little, sighing. "...don't, Sconi." she says, softly. "I'm sure you can find someone else to torment, no?" She takes a deep breath, steadying herself. "and my point was that the seamstress who was once a potter isn't carrying Clan secrets to the Potters." |

"Ahh... but the butcher's and the baker's..., you have no idea what they go through. Suffice to say, never disguise yourself as a pastry chef to infiltrate a town for the purposes of purchasing fine cuts of meat, yet somehow Greta and her husband seem to get along, and never has a meal tasted so good as when they collaborate." |

Yamiko frowns a little, lost. "...right, I'll keep that in mind... anyway, I'm a liability. If I keep going from one clan to the other and back all the time, nobody'll be able to trust me." Last Edited: Oct 25, 2008, 6:44 pm |

"Why would you be going back and forth?" He asks, puzzled, "And you'd only be a liability if you've learned nothing of diplomacy." |

"Because my husband works for the Order and expects me to assist him, not to mention I'd have to attend services and so forth..." she looks puzzled that he'd not expect that. |

"I'm pretty sure that attending church isn't quite the same thing as organization-hopping, nor is helping someone. I've been friendly with many a man of many a class and never had to renounce my ties." |

"Not people we waged war with!" Her hands ball into fists, as she turns to go again. "Forget about me." |

His mouth twitches into his usual mischievous grin, "I wouldn't be so sure about that..." |

Yamiko sighs heavily. "...be glad I've left or you'd be explaining that statement to my father." |

"What? Am I supposed to be ashamed that a former foe and I went out and had a good time together? We're friends with them now, why shouldn't we fraternize. Are you going to be as hidebound and intractable as the one you railed against?" |

"I've been accused of being a traitor. Trust me, you don't want to bring those suspicions down on your head." |

"I'm above suspicion, mostly because everyone knows that everyone knows not to believe anything I say. It's fun to play crazy every once in a while, and a lot safer in the long run." |

"Then I wish you the best of luck." She sighs a little, rubbing her temples. "Sconi... maybe we're just two very different people. You might be above suspicion, but I'm not, and if I come back I'll just get it from both sides." Last Edited: Oct 26, 2008, 2:11 am |

"Well, that first bit is certainly true, and here's the difference. I've done as I wanted, and worked people so that it worked out well for me. You, however, has done as those around you wish, and struggled to try to benefit from it. Ignore suspicion coming your way, and comport yourself with dignity, and none will be able to touch you. Therein lies the secret to my success." Last Edited: Oct 26, 2008, 2:50 am |

Yami bows her head. "...thank you, Sconi, but.... I don't... I can't work that way. I have too much to live up to, too many people to disappoint." |

He reaches a hand out for hers, "That's precisely the problem, the only person you should worry about disappointing is yourself. Anyone worth caring about will follow along, take a moment, run an inventory. Your findings will back me up." |

She lets him take her hand, but takes a deep breath herself. "...Sconi... what are your parents like?" |

"They're mine, I have them so wrapped around my finger that I can do no wrong. Actually... I haven't even talked to them in a year or so, I hope they're alright." a small note of concern sneaks into his voice at the last. "They should be, they're bright enough to stay out of the way of anything they can't talk themselves out of." |

Yamiko chuckles a little. "I mean... are they proud of you? Do they show up when you get an award or something and take you out for ice cream? Do they remind you they love you and..." her voice shakes a little. "...nevermind. I guess it's different for people who have parents. I mean, I love Kaelas to death, but he's not Mom and Dad, you know?" |

"I know what you mean, and I think true parentage is overrated. My parents would probably show up if I told them, and gave them some indication it was important, but it would all be a farce. They have no idea what it is I really do, it's on a completely different plane. Trying to explain our work to them would be met with the same lack of comprehension that you'd display if my mother started to comment on the pros and cons of using a crimp sleeve in bracken, or some such. There is no joy to be found in hollow praise, the good in life comes from within, those outside are merely capable of altering the flow slightly." |
