Energy affects how many times your golem can attack each round - you'll notice in attack report some rounds where your golem doesn't do anything because it's too tired to attack? Stronger power supplies eliminate that. Also, they reduce the motivation cost to attack things.

At the library. I believe it requires library/workshop levels instead of minimum resource field levels.

Powersource Level 1 requires Library Level 4
Level 2 Requires Library level 8
Level 3 requires Library level 12

Goes up to Level 5, but not sure anymore what the last 2 are; and It's not all Library because the Library only goes to level 15.

See Help>Charts for more information on what buildings require to construct.

I'm pretty sure level 4 is library 14, and level 5 is library 15, without other conditions.

Level 5 is Library 15, I can confirm that one.

Can't remember what the requirements were for Level 4, but I think Sconi's right.

Of course, more powerful animating sprits are both larger, more expensive, and heavier.

Here's a little chart of which levels I have.
It goes: Name, Energy, Slots, weight, cost

Requires no research
Aemaeth Parchment Strip 100 1 slot, 1 lb No cost

Requires Level 1 Power sources:
Clay Tablet 150 1 slot, 5 lbs 1000clay, 250money

Requires Level 2 Power sources:
Alchemical Heatstone 200 2 slot, 15 lbs 1500stone 150brass 500money

Alchemical Icestone 225 2 slot, 20 lbs 2500stone 150brass 1500money

Alchemical Acidstone 250 2 slot, 25 lbs 3500stone 150brass 2000money

Alchemical Voidstone 275 2 slot, 30 lbs 4500stone 250brass 2500money

You notice that while the first stage requires clay, all the stage 2 p.sources require stone, brass, and a increasing amount of cash.

They are also much larger, requiring that you either put them in a part without armor, or in a higher level part (which has more space.) Most power sources can be mounted in either the torso, abdomen, or pelvis, but I have heard that more advanced ones require a chest mount.
