The young girl sits, twirling her fork in some pasta at Sissel's, her legs swinging gaily beneath the table, her skirts flounced just so for best effect, her hair pinned up in a girlish style. "And I mean, like, it was the biggest story of the year, right? So like, what gives? They just vanish off the face of the earth?" Bolstered by her companion's silent nod of approval, she hurriedly resumes speaking before he can open his mouth. "You know what I think? I think it was a shotgun wedding, see, only she lost the baby so they just quietly dissolved the whole thing and went their ways. Only I wish someone would find out for sure. Inquiring minds deserve to know, right?"

From the perspective of Ace:

The rather effeminate companion nods, shifting his tophat to reveal more of his face as he finally gets a word in edgewise. He'd hatched this plan, oh, about fifteen rambling paragraphs ago - but, he had this effect on women a lot. Ace gave his charming smirk, pointing with his fork. "You know, I hear there's some guys that'll pay big money for newspaper stories. If you're so deprived of gossip, why don't we get together a team and publish a column or an op-ed piece or something? Get some extra money together for textbooks and the like. I bet they'll pay big money for some interviews."

Nanashi looked up from reading his book, Proper Application of Exploding Golems. "Bah! Those news hounds will print any story to make a buck. And most of it is just tripe and fluff. You wanna know history go to the library. You wanna know what really happened...go find the Underdark."

Lifting his cup, he called, "Sissel! More bread and another pot of tea, if you please."

Jellikal frowns. "Yeah, but I doubt the library's going to tell me anything in this case. I like that idea - let's get a team of academics together and go ambush people and ask them, like... what really happened?"

Ace nods. "But who would we ask? It's not like the good Father is available for interviews from the, er... less than faithful, and Yamiko's been sulking ever since."

"Well, there's gotta be someone on the staff that knows her," replies the girl. "Think she told the Chancellor? Oh, or what about Professor Denerid? He seems to be on top of things."

The serving wench walked over to Nanashi's table and set down a fresh basket of bread and pitcher of tea. As he ignored the saucy swiveling of her hips, her flirtatious smile turned to a pout. He handed her the silver and then dismissed her from his mind. After she exaggeratedly slipping the silver into her blouse, and no reaction from him, she huffed back to the bar, grumbling under her breath.

He broke a pastry open as he said, "You two are thinking much too directly. The Head of the Church can not be bothered to talk to the infidels, and the lady is too upset to talk of her experience. So find the gossipmongers and rumor mills. As they say 'the walls have ears'."

Taking a bite of warm, flaky pastry, he poured a cup of tea and returned to his book.

Nanashi sighed as he closed his book, "I guess a tavern isn't the best place to read a book anyway." He set down his book and waved to the pair, "I could use some company, pull up a bench. Want anything to drink?

"I am afraid I can't help you track down the snoops, but I can try to help you connect the pieces."

Within a few moments, Jellikal and Ace are seated at Nanashi's table, and Jelli's pulled out parchment and pens to jot things down. "Ok, so we know for a fact Father Coyne and Ms. Kuronue are in the thick of it. Any ideas on how to get to Coyne?"

Ace grins wickedly. "I could pretend to be a new convert, put on a nice dress, and work my way into him. Then I could offer him special alone time with the nice young lady, and when we've got him alone, I could get him to let loose some pillow talk that..."

Jellikal interrupts her companion there. "Ok, that is SO not cool, Ace. No fair using feminine wiles for evil!"

Nanashi looked back and forth between his table companions, "Ace's feminine wiles not withstanding, I would assume you want the information you are looking for fairly quick. Infiltration is a matter of patience, go too fast and you get caught. Also, only an idiot would talk about a past love while sharing a bed.

"If you spent any time reading a book instead of in front of a mirror, you would know that the best spy networks are already in place. They are right under your nose and you don't even notice them."

Jellikal frowns. "Hey! I'll have you know I got straight A's this semester. I'm just, um, not that great with politics." She blushes a little. "Seriously, though, I should research the history of the Order, maybe there's some hidden passageways and...wait, how does that help us get an interview? No, we need to make lists of all the friends each of them has and try to get exclusives with them so we can piece together the best method of approach."

Nanashi picked up another pastry from the basket and refilled his mug. "You are overthinking this. Like I said the network you want is already in place, both at the chapel and back at the University. Just talk to the people who are invisible. Better yet, listen to them while they gossip. St. Alfred's Chapel is the biggest church in all Muelsfell, do you really think the Head Priest, the Archons, and all the higher ups pay attention to all the kitchen drudges? The cleaning staff? Same with supporting staff and most of the students at the University."

Jellikal nods. "Great. Let's make a three-pronged attack. You see what you can find among the drudges, the servants, and the like. Keep careful, detailed notes -you never know what's important. I'll start investigating the faculty, since I can get in to see any member on some pretense or another. Ace...." She frowns. "Find a cute dog for a mascot?"

Ace rolls his eyes. "Ha. Ha. I'll infiltrate Magier, see what I can turn up with my feminine wiles."

Jelli rolls her eyes right back. "You do that."

Nanashi sat forward on his bench, "And just how am I supposed to get into Magier to learn anything? Ace should go instead, just instead of using feminine wiles...try being plain and blending in. If you stand out, you will draw attention and people will be less likely to say anything around you."

He lifted the strangely empty basket, certain there had been more pastries a moment ago, and signaled to the serving wench again, "Besides, you won't stay on church grounds long, flirting with all and sundry."

Ace grins. "Fine. I'll infiltrate the servants first, before I try my plan."

Jellikal nods. "And you should investigate the University staff, the non academic staff - we have caterers and janitors and the like, they'd get suspicious if a young lady of means started poking around but you might pull it off." She pauses. "Oh, I'm sorry, I almost forgot. I'm Jellikal Stanton, pleased to meet you, and this is Alci--"

Now it's Ace's turn to cut her off. "Ace. They call me Ace."

Nanashi looked at Ace questioningly, as the waitress sashayed back to the table once more. "Another basket of bread, if you please. And if I could trouble the chef for a plate of sliced herd beast and cheese?" he asked, and the girl smiled coquettishly as she nodded. "Also another pot of tea would be nice. I find myself thirsty again and it looks like I might be here a while," he said as he discreetly slipped a coin into her apron.

As the girl sauntered back to the kitchens, he turned to his companions, "Greetings, Lady Stanton. Ace... My duties to Otaku constrain me from clandestine investigations, unfortunately. You wouldn't believe the amount of unfiled paperwork that was left by my predecessor. It has been a month and I still haven't even found the desk!

"I might be able to get one of my assistants to do it. She is always blathering on about the romantic nature of spying. She may be a bit starry-eyed but she has a good head on her shoulders and she reports directly to me."

Ace nods. "Then, sir, I'd say that sounds like a plan. When shall we three meet again, as they say?"

"How about we meet here again in a week and see what we can piece together between us. But it might take longer than that to get the whole picture," Nanashi replied as the girl returned with a tray of food, a content smile on her slightly flushed face.
