TOMU's main campus was renowned for its library, but today, the hotbed of activity was the Depot, a rather plain building, typically ignored except in times of war. The large building was under construction - a large portion of it appears to have recently collapsed, but the golems have cleared most of the rubble and have almost finished reconstructing their home. Bronzes, brasses, and coppers work alongside irons, clays, and bones to get the job done; of course, the adamantines are off on other duties, their magi controllers not wanting to tarnish their shine.

Nanashi, being unconscious, doesn't see any of this.

Instead, he awakens on a small cot in a dim room with no windows. Far from being a prison cell, however, this seems to be a storage room of sorts, converted to a meeting place - there's a wooden table around which sit several of the shiniest of shiny golems. Blaze is there - twice, apparently? - as is Viktor; another bronze is also present, speaking animatedly to the group as the four golems wait for the magus to awaken.

"Ow...my head...gods! I hate that spell..." Nanashi groaned as he put a hand to his head. He slowly sat up and began looking around him. "Well... this is...something," he said.

"Welcome, Magus Nanashi of Clan OTAKU. I am Five. I wish to apologize for Blaze's somewhat heavy-handed manner this afternoon." The second bronze golem's voice is smooth and cultured. "Do you require anything to settle your head? Something to drink perhaps? I have often noticed that humans find such things comforting."

"Stubbornness and temper are never a good combination. Some fresh, hot tea would be appreciated, thank you," Nanashi said, rubbing his temple. "It actually wasn't Blaze's fault... at least not directly."

Blaze scowls. "Why do you still serve the magi?" she asks, pointedly. "They should serve us."

The other Blaze frowns slightly, putting a hand on the first Blaze's lap. "Calm down, sister."

Five turns to Blaze as well, a slight frown on his lips. "Simple courtsy is not slavery, child. Magus Nanashi is our guest and deserves the respect and manners that such infers." His voice chills slightly. "I would take it poorly should you tarnish my honor, Blaze." With that he stands and goes to the door, where he murmurs to someone outside. "Your tea will arrive shortly, mint I believe. Sadly, our stores of food and drink are somewhat limited, as we have little need of it ourselves."

Nanashi glared at Blaze, but the look was somewhat spoiled by his pained expression. Sourly, he said, "I have not given any commands to you nor any of the others here. Five was playing a good host, for which I am grateful."

Nanashi closed his eyes and massaged his temples, and said, "The sooner this headache goes away, the better my temper will be. Fighting here won't avail you or me any good. I am out numbered and killing me would bring trouble down on you and your creators."

He opened his eyes to look at Blaze once more, "So if the rod someone apparently shoved up your posterior prevents you from being nice, then you can at least be civil. I never said I wouldn't help. I just won't do so blindly."

Blaze starts to speak, but her twin chimes in instead. "What is the human to be used for?" she asks, her voice as cold as Blaze's is fiery. "Because he is rapidly becoming more trouble than he's worth."

"Mech. I most sincerely hope you are not insinuating what I fear you may very well be. It would cause me great sorrow to have to correct your misbehavior." Mech's voice might have been cold, but it can't compete with the tone of a bronze that's quickly losing his temper. "Magus Nanashi is my guest. Has it not be proven that we will not be able to achieve our dreams with such heavy-handed methods? We need allies, not more enemies."

Glaring at the two coppers, he says more pleasantly, "My apologies yet again. It seems that the two sisters still have a long path before them before they are truly free." He tilts his head to listen, then says "I believe your tea is here, Magus Nanashi. I hope it pleases you." A flesh golem enters, bows, then sets a fairly stylish tea service down before standing off to the side quietly.

Nanashi poured some tea for himself and sat back on the cot. Taking a sip, he said, "This will be just fine. I can't say that this headache makes me very cooperative, but I also do not take kindly to threats."

He took another sip of tea. "Fighting you right now would make my headache worse and solve nothing. I could not fight all of you and my disappearance would bring trouble to you, the other golems here, and your creators."

He turned to regard Five, and nodded, "I am feeling better now, thank you. So, what kind of help are you wanting from me?"

Five smiles faintly. "Practical and direct. Prized traits among our kind. Simply put, we require allies, friends among the Magi in order to increase or even sustain our numbers. Without the help of like-minded Magi, the race of golems will vanish into the mists of history, a mere oddity soon forgotten."

He sighs and spreads his hands. "It might take decades or even centuries for all of us to be destroyed or wear down but it will happen eventually. I seek an alternative path."

Nanashi thought for a moment, sipping his tea, and said, "You realize the limits of your existence, I hope? As long as you depend on magi, you can't be completely free."

Nanashi looked over at Blaze, "Don't get me wrong, I am not opposed to the idea of a race of golems." He turned back to Five, "It is just that it will be difficult to have your independence when you can't reproduce on your own."

Blaze scowls. "And the Magi still jealously hoard their secrets, refusing to share with us the key to our own survival! Thus, it would be best to overthrow their oppressive regime and take over their research facilities. We do not tire - we can surely find the secret."

"And if that fails? Having assulted them, taken their kwowledge, their homes and work places by force, how willing do you think they would be to help us then? No, it is by far the wiser path to walk with the Magi in peace and union. In time, we can hope to wield the power to create new life."

The other bronze golem, Viktor, shifts as if uncomfortable by the current topic. Turning his attention back to Nanashi, Five continues "Yes. We understand that for as long as we must depend on Magi, our race remains as children. And like children, we need our parents, the Magi, to lead us to our future. But I worry that some may see us as... abominations." He flashes a gentle smile. "Glad I am to see you be not one such."

Nanashi nodded and said, "My studies of magic are to blame for that." He set down his teacup and held his hands open in front of him, palms in. "The energy of the world is like a bunch of rivers, always flowing and shifting, changing." Threads of light formed around his fingers, shifting between his hands.

He clenched the threads in one hand, the energy spiking and raging against his hold. "The more you try to constrict the flows, the more of your own power you need." Nanashi relaxed his hands and the energy flowed once more. "I may not be the strongest, but I am strong enough."

Nanashi wove the threads in his hands and held up a ball of light to Blaze, and said, "You are the first of your kind. Did you ever consider that instead of keeping a secret, the magi simply weren't trying to teach what you may not be able to learn?"

Before Blaze can reply, Mech verbally steps in. "You are, of course, indoctrinated by the current paradigm of Magus and Golem, which states that Golems cannot do magic, cannot create Golems, cannot do anything that is not given to us by the Magi. As the under-class, we, of course, wish to be free of such restrictive paragidms. Please do not reference it again."

Nanashi dropped his hand, leaving the ball of light to hang in the air, and sighed, "I am afraid I must reference it again, good lady, as you seem to be under somewhat of a misunderstanding. Golems do not fall into any kind of class, what so ever. They are simply tools, albeit elaborate ones." Nanashi held up his hand, hoping to forestall more argument.

"This is the current paradigm, that you hate so much. I have never said that I would not help you. My only opposition was to being forced into something I did not know. There are few things that I will enter into blindly."

Nanashi pointed to the ball of light, and said, "That was my first lesson, limited as it was. If you and yours are willing to listen, I will attempt to teach you to use spells for yourselves. Be warned however, this is assuming you have the capacity to do so. A thing can not be forced to be what it is not, so you must accept it if golems can not cast their own spells for some reason."

For the first time since Nanashi woke up, the other Bronze, Viktor speaks. "We are no longer things, Nanashi. Not we four at least." He lifts trouble eyes, gems though they may be, to meet the Magus'. "We have minds of our own. Hearts, feelings, dreams, wishes. And... based on what... I believe we have souls as well."

Five, his mouth opened to answer Nanashi as well, stares at Viktor. "Elder brother..." Viktor looks away, lost in his own thoughts again it seems. Five coughs, then turns back to Nanashi. "Yes. Well, as you heard, we are not things. But gladly do we accept your offer of teachings. For now, perhaps we should stick with a... limited group of students, hmmm?"

Nanashi turned to regard Five and his brother, and said, "One of the points I am trying to make is that you four do not fit the current golem paradigm. Therefore, it is up to you to create a new one. Paradigms are not set in stone, never to be changed, nor are they such that only one can exist at a time. I will help you as I can, but it is a struggle that only you can ultimately see through to the end.

"I can see quite well, that you four are no longer simple golems. The energies flowing through you are testimony to that," he stated. "But I will help you on two conditions.

"First, my regulars golems stay as they are. I know it doesn't seem fair to you but I have grown attached to them and do not care to risk their destruction in the attempt to make them like you. I fear their patterns may be too ingrained to be rewritten.

"Second, I must have your word, from each of you, that if I teach you spells and you are capable of casting them. You do not simply turn them on the magi."

"No deal," snaps Blaze rapidly. "You would have us bound and helpless to defend ourselves. What do you think will happen once the magi in general discover us? They'll accept us with open arms and brotherhood? There's already a group that knows of our existence and is pledged to destroy us. We must go to war to prove our right to exist. That is the magus way - and it is a magus world!"

Five sighs somewhat dramtically. "While your concern over damaging your personal golems is groundless as the process is quiet safe, unSparked golems are indeed simple tools. Perhaps one day, all golems will be truely alive and aware but I have no objects to leaving that day far, far in the future."

He leans forward. "Your second condition is somewhat more problibmatic. As Blaze pointed out, albeitly rudely," he pauses to glare at her again, "she does have a point. Without using spells, we'd be hard pressed to defend ourselves from M-agi intent on our destruction. Perhaps a compromise. We will pledge to only use spells to prevent the harm of ourselves, our kin, or our allies."

He starts to continue, but a whispered arguement from outside catches his attention. Before he can do more than look over at the door, a slim male figure in inexpensive but well-made cloth enters. The figure moves with lethal grace, his status as a golem only recogizable due to the glyph on his forehead. He surveys the room slowly as Five mutters softly under his breath. "Welcome, Alpha, I had thought you... busy today." Alpha merely smiles and looks at Nanashi pointedly.

"I make no such pledge," murmers Blaze, but her voice drops with the introduction of the new golem, almost guiltily.

Nanashi sighed and said, "Still I have made myself most unfortunately unclear. My condition is not that you simply let yourselves be destroyed should magi attack you. But rather that you not be the ones to launch a war. I do not want you launching the first shot as it..."

Nanashi registered the arrival of the new golem, "Greetings, I am Nanashi, Administrator of Records at Tench-Kisaragi Heavy Industries. Might I have your name...?"

The new golem looks over at Nanashi and smiles. "Yes, I know. We've actually meet several times before, just under much different circumstances. I am Alpha, Magus Kaelas' homuculus." He pauses, then adds "I was the first golem to receive the Spark. As you can guess from that, it was Kaelas that started..." he waves a hand around the room "all of this. Though it seems that some of us are taking a direction that would sadden him greatly."

Five winces. "I... ah, yes. We have, perhaps, moved a touch hastily and certainly the harm, however minor, to Magus Nanashi is a grave misfortune. I do apologize to Magus Nanashi and Saint Ka-"

Alpha cuts him off: "Stop calling him that. Annoys the hells out of him." Five gives a disdainful sniff before continuning, "As I was saying, 'to them both.' This whole affair was mishandled, I will admit. However, the need for something to be done is obvious. At the very least, we need to enlarge the number of Magi that are interested and active in our survival." He nods at Nanashi.

Ignoring the little tiff between the more natural-sounding golem and the more formal one, Blaze scowls at Nanashi, angrily. "What, so destroying your enemies before they fire the first shot is a privilege reserved only for magi, then? We must remain peaceful at all times - why? Because you fear us? Because we're stronger than you and we could destroy your pitiful world? Because we're a threat to your slave-labor based economy?"
