I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but it seems kinda cheap.

My homunculus with screaming iron mask was taking on a spined troll, but then it closed to that "ineffective" zone. a turn later it said I ran out of ammunition. This means that it actually spent ammunition to not attack? how is that right?

I just had the same issue occur. I started out the combat with 10 cannonballs, and ended with 1 - but only actually fired the cannon in Round 1. My golem was set on Hangback.

Another oddity to this is in Round 9, when my golem attacked with his fists, the Shoulder-mounted Trebuchet fired - which I didn't think was supposed to happen with melee attacks. Of course, if it is supposed to fire with melee attacks, that's another bug entirely. :)


[Round 1] An illusionary mouth appears on Carnivore! and magically speaks, "I am the tool of death; the instrument of destruction."
A halo of violet light surrounds Carnivore!, enhancing its strength. Carnivore! begins to advance upon his Flesh Golem while his Flesh Golem begins to advance upon Carnivore!. The defender's brass knuckles is out of range with about 52 feet between them, but the attacker readies its bronze cannon.
Carnivore! uses its bronze cannon and hits the left hand (8 dmg), the right arm (4 dmg) and the left leg (10 dmg). The wall was hit with the shoulder-mounted trebuchet 3 times(94 dmg) and has fallen by 1 level.

[Round 2] Carnivore! withdraws 12 feet while his Flesh Golem continues to advance upon Carnivore!. The defender's brass knuckles is out of range with about 31 feet between them.
Carnivore! attacks with its bronze cannon and misses once, failing to hit at all.

[Round 3] Carnivore! fails to back up while his Flesh Golem closes to melee with Carnivore!. The attacker's bronze cannon is too close to use effectively.

His Flesh Golem attacks with its brass knuckles and misses 5 times, but also hits the pelvis (4 dmg), the chest (2 dmg) and the abdomen (8 dmg).

[Round 4] Carnivore! fails to back up while his Flesh Golem holds its ground. The attacker's bronze cannon is too close to use effectively.

His Flesh Golem attacks with its brass knuckles and hits once on the right leg (3 dmg).

[Round 5] The combat stalls as both opponents either lack the energy to attack or are in no condition to strike back.Carnivore! fails to back up while his Flesh Golem holds its ground. The attacker's bronze cannon is too close to use effectively.

[Round 6] Carnivore! fails to back up while his Flesh Golem holds its ground. The attacker's bronze cannon is too close to use effectively.

His Flesh Golem attacks with its brass knuckles and hits once on the left leg (4 dmg).
[Round 7] Carnivore! fails to back up while his Flesh Golem holds its ground. The attacker's bronze cannon is too close to use effectively.

His Flesh Golem attacks with its brass knuckles and hits once on the left arm (10 dmg).

[Round 8] The combat stalls as both opponents either lack the energy to attack or are in no condition to strike back.Carnivore! withdraws 16 feet while his Flesh Golem closes to melee with Carnivore!. The attacker's bronze cannon is too close to use effectively.

[Round 9] Carnivore! holds its ground while his Flesh Golem holds its ground.
Carnivore! uses its fist and hits the right arm (5 dmg), the right arm (6 dmg) and the abdomen (6 dmg). The wall was hit with the shoulder-mounted trebuchet 3 times(86 dmg) and has fallen by 1 level. Animated spikes along the wall puncture the attacker's chest(2 dmg), right arm(2 dmg) and left hand(4 dmg). The right arm flies apart in a shower of torn leather and stitches!
His Flesh Golem attacks with its brass knuckles and hits once on the chest (2 dmg).

[Round 10] Carnivore! withdraws 20 feet while his Flesh Golem closes to melee with Carnivore!. The attacker's bronze cannon is too close to use effectively.

His Flesh Golem attacks with its brass knuckles and hits once on the right arm (9 dmg).

I think the trebuchet is supposed to work the same as the crowbar for item clans or the... dwarven hammer?... for melee clans. I can't fully remember but if you successfully attack, the item does extra damage to the wall. Not being in a ranged clan, don't know if the trebuchet is still supposed to work at melee range or not since it only ever hits the wall. Could be oversight, but I am thinking it was intentional.

Hrmm, well i could see it this way... in a Ranged/Item clan, would the hammer do damage to the wall if the attacker is attacking from a distance?

It wouldn't make sense, but since the descriptions aren't THAT clear i could see it just being a blanket function.

I remember putting a trebuchet on a golem i always attacked with in aggressive and with fists only because I assumed it's function would work just as stated. Never attacked with that setup though, so I can't confirm.
