Hello, all. Today I took a break from having my Homunculus doing its part to render exotic chimeric species extinct and sent my level 1 stone golem into Yul's Marsh. The thing had crystal eyes, a clay tablet, and clan armor (Reinforced Leather) on every section. I hit the thing with a Flying Anvil spell and sent it against a Giant Widow. In five rounds, the widow utterly and completely destroyed the thing. I've had combats go poorly before, but this was just tragic. Just when I think I've got a handle on how the combat system works... Don't get me wrong, I understand that we have a randomized system, which I aprciate and prefer, but this strikes me as a bit odd. Are my calculations way off, or was this just unusually bad luck for me? Shouldn't the golem with what it had on it have fared better (again, allowing for randomness)? Am I missing something? Thanks for any help offered to a suffering newb. I'm off to perform a little golem funeral. Pet rocks will be sold shortly afterward. |

With crystal eyes and a clay tablet, thirty or forty damage in four rounds with an unboosted clay with that equipment is in the realm of possibility, but nowhere near a certainty. Sounds like you need more armour at the very least, so you can survive long enough to finish the job, and probably a better source as well. |

Espescially a better power source and eyes I'd think |

Especially the powersource, clay tablet isn't strong enough to properly power a stone golem. Even a voidstone (which is almost twice the power) isn't strong enough. Assuming your golem lasted long enough you would notice it running out of power in later rounds. Also probably need to boost the golem for higher bonus damage if you are sending a golem with ECL of 6 against a monster with ECL of 9. |

I agree that you need better armor, too. I fight the Giant Widow with a Level 3 Clay, and it needs full Heavy Iron Plate to take minimum damage (8) from its attacks. I don't remember for certain, but I think it was still taking higher damage when I tried with Medium Iron Plate. However, even when well armored and equipped, the Widow still can deal nearly 200 damage over a few rounds before dying, although it's usually closer to ~100. Without enough armor, what happened to your golem is not unbelievable. |

While all level 1 and 2 creatures are fairly easy, being designed for newbies to hunt, above that the creatures vary widely for their levels. Looks like you hit a tough one. |

Looks like you hit a tough one. See, that's the thing. That exact same golem, with the *exact* same gear, was last used to clobber a half-dozen Marsh Dragons. He came out of each of those fights battered, but with nothing spending some Stone wouldn't cure (i.e., he didn't even lose any parts). Then, for a larf, I send him against a creature one level lower and significantly *less* powerful, and it is my first outright total loss of a golem. Again, baring the possibility of just plain rotten luck, I have to ask, "What the heck?" But, I digress. Time to look into some better power sources and armor. Thanks to everyone for your input! ...doesn't anyone want a pet rock? |

Not all monsters were created equal. ...doesn't anyone want a pet rock? Already got one, thanks. Its name is Speedy. |

If you want to see a monster that's espescially strong for it's level, go take a look at the kobold nightshade... ;-) |

Kobold Nightshade isn't a problem with the right spell... |

Nothing is a problem with the right spell (on a reasonably chosen golem) ;) Last Edited: Nov 14, 2009, 5:12 am |
