"To be honest I don't usually do much more than drink and listen here, but it smells like decent food, and I don't know of anywhere nearby that's good for certain," he says with a shrug.

Yamiko nods, attempting to signal the barmaid again. She doesn't resume serious conversation again until their food has arrived - not long, given the short-order nature of most of the dishes. She finds herself partaking of some sandwich consisting of a round portion of beef between what appears to be a bisected roll of some kind - truly a novel invention, but one, she realizes belatedly, not meant to be eaten with gloves. Still, she retains them. She'll have Homely pick up some extra-strength laundry soap when she gets back.

Naturally Laidan notices that she did not remove her gloves. He debates letting her keep her silence about them for a few seconds but his curiosity wins out and he decides to ask her about them.
But given that he has just taken quite a large bite from his meal, he catches her eye, then flicks his gaze between the sandwich her hands, and her face again while raising an inquisitive eyebrow.

Yamiko blushes faintly, averting her gaze slightly and taking another bite of the sandwich.

Laidan finishes chewing, and takes a drink. "I think most magi have stories of accidents during golem construction which turn them interesting colors. I know I have a few myself. I won't pester you for details if you don't wish to share."

Accident during golem construction... yes, that sounds about likely. She nods, relieved at his kindness. "I must admit, I was a touch reckless during my convalescent sabbatical."

Laidan nods, chewing again. "My belated congratulations on your recovery," he adds between bites. Gotta remember to eat while I'm working, I'm making a pig of myself

She nods. "Thank you. The real congratulations is due the Chancellor" - dammit - "Kaelas; it was due to his rather advanced level of medical study that I was able to regain mobility." She pauses, then, musing. "Perhaps it would be fitting to open a School for the Arcane Medical Arts within the university, named for him? He could possibly be persuaded to oversee the department, at least at first... where on earth we'd find teachers I don't know, but..." She blushes then. "Sorry, I'm rambling."

Laidan sets down the remaining few bites of sandwich. "No, I think that's actually an excellent idea. I'd certainly send some of Hereti-Corp's more medically minded staff to such classes. They're talented, but mostly self taught, and some of those apprentices end up needing all the staff can manage sometimes..." He shakes his head at the foolishness of apprentices.

Yamiko smiles wistfully. "Stubborn, creatively-minded, and half-trained magi are the bane to any leader, I believe. Sometimes additional training helps - but sometimes it only hurts. Did you hear that while I was recovering, Kaelas hired Sconibulus as a teacher? Of actual students? Freshmen, at that. I believe the next cataclysm isn't far off."

"Hmm..." Laidan considers "...I would think that such a group could easily achieve apocalypse, or paradise, or possibly half would head one way and half the other, cancelling themselves out. Actually the last option seems most likely to me, but probably also the most fun to watch. From a significant distance."

Yamiko laughs. "I doubt there's a distance significant enough to protect one from their workings." She sobers rapidly, then, taking a sip from her pint. "I certainly didn't manage to escape the fallout from the Spark project."

"I wasn't aware that Sconibulus had initiated that project" Laidan likewise takes a drink, looking lost in thought for a moment.

"He did not," she replies, softly. "But I fear Chancellor Kaelas is much along the same lines."

"I have avoided research in that direction for precisely that reason...whether I have the abilities to create them or not, I feel my tools should be tools, not free thinking beings. Though it is an interesting line of research, the dangers are now quite apparent."

Yamiko nods. "Indeed. And yet everywhere I turn I am confronted with a celebratory atmosphere and these creatures, who have not been adequately studied, being given more and more privileges on campus, as though they had proven themselves to be utterly trustworthy."

Laidan thinks a moment. "In my limited experience they seem much like people - some good, some bad, some utterly unpredictable. Of course I have not had much contact with them. I don't even know how many there are these days. Have they figured out how to ...replicate ...themselves yet?" Clearly he's not certain what the correct word would be.

Yamiko shudders. "I should hope not. The only reason I can see that they don't utterly take over our society and enslave or kill us all is that they require us to reproduce. They're faster, stronger, better than us in almost every way - we made them in our image but better, after all. We've become utterly useless."

"I like to think that if it came down to it we magi could hold our own against them, one way or another." Laidan takes a deep drink, finishing off his beer once again, glancing at Yamiko to see how full her glass is. "So I imagine those golems are included in your duties...I certainly don't envy you there."

Yamiko's mug is still half-full; she's slowed down on the drinking as she's gotten to talking. "They consider themselves clan members - after all, most of them have 'Property of TOMU' stamped inside their torsos."

Laidan switches to water for now. I haven't talked this much since the last board meeting he thinks. "Do they still consider themselves actual property of the clan, or just take that as a direct indicator of membership?"

Yamiko shrugs a little. "The more... civilized ones seem to quietly sidestep the issue, at least in printed literature. For safety reasons, I refuse to meet with them in per-- face to face."

She looks out the window, remaining silent for some time. Finally, she speaks softly: "No, I do not believe I shall attend."

Viktor... always had been a bit of a raw patch for her - well, not always, just since her marriage fell apart. He'd been her favorite companion since she started wielding him in the MAGIER wars - his Sparking had at first been a dream come true, but as her dreams are wont to do, it had become a nightmare. A party for him - a grotesque mockery of a birthday party for a being who was not born - did not strike her as a pleasant evening.

Laidan is not so dense that he doesn't realize he has struck a nerve, and attempts a bit of humor, trying to lighten the mood. "I had considered going as a gem golem with one arm and no head....but that might be considered bad taste in such company."
