You know, it never occurred to me that this might be a bug before, but ever since I started this game the defender has advanced a number of feet equal to it's speed, and the attacker has advanced twice it's speed.

It was never an issue until these neat new ranged weapons came out. ^^

Are the attackers typically set to be aggressive? If so, that'll mean it'll try to get to melee faster.

If you're noticing it on golem combats and can positively be sure that the attacker is not set aggressively, then that might or might not be a bug.

Sorry for the might/might not vagueness, but there are a lot of things that would affect speed, such as current capacity, golem type, terrain, night/day, etc.
