Yamiko had had just about enough of this bullshit.

Unfortunately, she said the same thing just about every week.

The latest Incident had advanced the clan's doomsday clock to about 11:45, but luckily, the situation - caused by a couple of grad students and Sconi drinking too much and making war rather than love - had been successfully diffused. Again. Honestly, a lot of the shine was wearing off her position - she, like so many other Magistrates, had taken to reminiscing about the good old days of the Magier Wars, when evil was evil and good was good and right was right and wrong was wrong. Back then, wars meant something - they had gone to war to defend the freedom of the realms, not because a couple irritating kids had gone on a bender.

Deciding the best remedy for her ills was hair of the dog that bit Sconibulus, Yamiko wanders into her favourite tavern, plunking down at a corner booth with a frothy pint. She knew her status would keep people from bothering her so long as she had drinks on the table - at least, people she didn't consider friends.

Laidan has had a long day himself. Apparently some of the rowdier folks over at the University had gone carousing the previous night, and done a bit of damage. On the plus side the rumor mill said that Hereti Corps new Demon Whip was still unknown enough to be a deterrent to Sconibulus. It couldn't last, but Laidan was trying to focus on the positives as headed toward the pub. With a little luck he could relax over a few drinks, and maybe Yamiko would stop by; they'd spent entirely too little time together recently.
Walking through the door Laidan's eyes quickly settle on her in the corner, and an unconscious and slightly goofy (not to mention completely uncharacteristic) grin settles on his face as he negotiates his way to that side of the building.
"What a happy coincidence to run into you here, mind if I join you? You look nice, how are things?" he babbles. WTF?!? Did I really just say that? Calm down man!

Yamiko looks up, absently noting the weight of the medallion she now wore around her neck - she still wasn't used to the damn thing, but wearing it made people who hadn't seen her reputation still respect her, and made every third pint on the house at this pub.

"Laidan!" she says, cheerily, then pauses. "If you want to talk business I'm not here," she warns. "I'm done working for the day."

"We're in agreement then, no business talk allowed." Laidan pauses for a moment as his pint is delivered. "How've you been besides busy?"

She waves a hand. "There's a life outside Sconi's messes?" she muses, playfully. "Well, that and Kaelas' messes. Honestly, I think in my next life I'll just incarnate as a broom and be done with it." She grins, though, her spirits lifted by his presence. "Heard any juicy gossip lately?"

"Hmm..." Laidan cocks his head, thinking. "You mean besides about the aforementioned messes?" He grins with his statement but then frowns slightly "Actually not much, things have been surprisingly quiet lately, most of my clan seems to be deep in their own research. I'm quite glad to have a chance to chat with you, things have been quite dull aside from a few minor breakthroughs."

She nods. "Yeah. I always dreamed of the glamour of being a Sovereign Magistrate - never thought it would end up like this. If only there were great important tasks. Remember the Magier War? I keep reminiscing back to that, when things were simple, when you knew what had to be done and could just do it..."

She then gives him an impish grin. "But then, you weren't exactly known as a bastion of good and purity yourself, back then, were you?"

"I like to think that my reputation for 'Evil' is rather overstated, and actually, as I recall, it mostly started during and just after the war." He pauses for a sip. "Mmm, this is a good brew. You'll recall that we at Hereti were among the most outspoken, and we weren't at all afraid to back our words with action. Hell, we took down their ridiculous adamantine golem figurehead, though of course Kisaragi took most of the credit." Laidan still looks a bit bitter about that.
It might have been different if Magier had approached us beforehand, he thinks, With our science backing them they might have been able to enforce their ridiculous demands
"During the fighting we of course made many discoveries and I found that the best way of testing our new prototypes was against the defenses of other magi. I guess during the war I developed a tendency to attack those associated with the church, and this habit continued after as well. I expect my skirmishes with those "saintly" folks led to rumors of some sort of dark pact I must have against them. Entirely false of course." He smiles reassuringly and, realizing he's been somewhat dominating the conversation, takes a deep draw from his cup.

She waves a hand. "Nonsense. I fought them myself, and I'm not considered evil. No, I'm sure it has more to do with superstitions - you and I are both people of Science, but you perform your experiments more openly, whereas my tests are done in privately published papers that come out once every few months and which nobody ever reads. There is, after all, a lingering feeling that magic should not be subject to the rigours of science - despite the fact that it works in predictable, reliable ways." She takes a swig from her pint.

Laidan smiles "I'm glad you don't consider me evil. Of course we have our own paperwork that stays within the clan, thank goodness Necaria takes care of that end of the business...Oh, but that's dangerously close to work talk, sorry.... I agree that it's all science, and you're saying that since yours is practiced only in a school setting it's easier for the commoners to see it for the science it is? As opposed to the clearly visible destruction that mine has caused from time to time... a good point. Though certain individuals who shan't be spoken of have certainly made a reputation for themselves through their use of University science, but aren't spoken of quite so darkly by most as I am." He waves to a server for a refill, glancing questioningly at Yamiko's glass.

Yamiko drains her pint, signalling as well. "You should see how they're regarded in the University halls. Even my own cousin is ridiculed - though, he continues to do loud, explosive experiments with that creepy assistant of his."

"Not that there's anything wrong with a good explosion now and then, but Chaos magic makes my head hurt. The study, not just the inevitable explosions. Sheesh, even talking about it is complicated. I must say it can produce impressive results from time to time however."

She nods. "And he's very talented with it - but it's still entirely not my field. I've been running field trials on various equipment. I'd love to get my hands on some of your stuff," she singsongs, heavily insinuating something as fresh drinks are served.

"The feeling is entirely mutual," he replies, unsure if she's still talking about science...not that his answer would be any different either way. Then again, how much has she had to drink? On an empty stomach, Laidan is starting to feel his drinks already. "Are you busy this evening? Perhaps I could persuade you to join me for dinner and we can continue our conversation? I know an excellent place nearby."

Yamiko nods. "Once I finish this drink. It'd be a shame to waste it, but otherwise, I'd love dinner with you." She smiles, a little, impishly. "I must admit, I end up heating up rice and stir-frying meat most days. I end up too exhausted to cook properly."

"Oh of course we wouldn't want to waste the drinks" Laidan grins. "I'm surprised you don't have an assistant to help with such minor details as ensuring you eat at the end of the day. I recently had a new one forced on me by the rest of board. He's very dedicated to my well being...almost to the point of being creepy." He times it so they finish their drinks at the same time, then leaves payment on the table and offers his arm as they head off to a nice, but not ultra-fancy nearby restaurant.

Yamiko takes Laidan's arm, smiling and laughing as they walk to the restaurant - acting, in fact, like the young lady she is and not the age she pretends to be in order to command respect. She was, after all, still only a teenager in the Magier Wars; it's hard to remember sometimes, with all she's been through, but she's not nearly lived long enough to be this bitter and fed up with the world.

During dinner, she manages to relax and actually enjoy herself, seeming to forget her woes -- at least, until a TOMU-branded golem arrives to interrupt their meal, bearing a message branded with OTAKU's seal. Trade negotiations so important that the golem feels entitled to interrupt what might be a private conference between SMs?

Yamiko opens the letter, her eyes resuming their exhaustion as she realizes she'll have to think about work.... and stares at it, speechless, having broken-off mid-apology, her mouth hanging open. She attempts a sentence a few times, stammering, then looks up, her eyes full of menace, still tongue-tied to the point where her face is beginning to flush with pure rage. She looks, in essence, about to pop a blood vessel.

Finally, she manages a word: "SCONI!"

Laidan nods once, a grimmace of commiseration on his face. I could crush him for her....he thinks, but doesn't quite say aloud. "Ah. In that case I will understand if you must cut the evening short. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance." He says formally. "Or if you want me to crush him for you." He says, attempting to make it sound like a joke (and mostly succeeding he thinks).

Yamiko throws the letter onto the table, rubbing her head. "I might very well let you. This... this is inexcusable."

The letter, if he dares to peek at private correspondence when it's thrown face-up onto the table before him, is from Otaku - an incident report, in very angry tones, indicating that Sconi had violated one of the longest-running non-aggression pacts in the realms.

While not normally above a little peeking at such things, Laidan restrains himself, instead asking "May I?" waving a hand at the letter and raising an eyebrow.

Yamiko nods. "There's no details in it, meaning I get to test out some of our legacy equipment in the dungeons on Sconi until he coughs up the whole story."

"You and three quarters of the teaching staff." She sighs, getting to her feet. "I'd best be going, unfortunately.." Her stomach gives a sympathetic growl as she glances over their half-eaten appetizers, pulling out her coin pouch as she intends to at least pay for her meal even if it goes uneaten.

She pauses, her rage abating momentarily as her face softens. "Thank you," she says, quietly. "I'll make it up to you soon, I swear. We'll go out later this week?"
