How many total levels of research are there for each research type?

Wondering if I should do the eye research, or just try to buy an eye from someone, ditto on power sources. Dunno how many levels there are to them, if the research slots are really a consideration or not.

Looking at the item available (under the trade menu select items desired) and what I have already researched, it looks like there are currently 5 levels of research for each item type (eyes, armor, power source). At some levels multiple items become available. I'm still not sure what you have to do to be able build the light sources.
